Bronze medal and ranking points at the Welsh Open

Rachel-Wheatley-Welsh-OpenFour of Oxford Judo’s judoka participated in the Welsh Open this Sunday. Rachel Wheatley in the u63s, Henry Winney in the u66s, and Matt Edmans and Liam Hart in the u90s.

The Welsh Open is a tough competition since it’s a double scoring ranking event, and it’s filled to the brim with great players eager to pull out their last resources to secure their places in the national trials.

On a day of “I should have won that fight” our players nonetheless got back on their feet, and Matt managed to get 7th place and 25 points, making him 16th in the national ranking and just securing him a place. Rachel fought all the way up through the repechage to get bronze and 100 points, putting her securely on 8th place in the national rankings, and therefore also securing her place in the national trials.

Also – that medal has a dragon on it!
